8/14/09 - Cumbres Pass, CO

We left the Big Meadows Campground and we drove to Pagosa Springs, Colorado. We stopped at a scenic overlook and talked with some Casita people from Granbury, Texas. We drove by Treasure Falls and stopped in Pagosa Springs to stock up on groceries and refill an empty propane tank. We drove through Chama, New Mexico and saw the old Cumbres and Toltec scenic train that runs from Chama to Antonito, Colorado over the Cumbres Pass. We had ridden this train several years ago so we didn’t do it again. We set up camp at the Trujillo Meadows Forest Service campground at Cumbres Pass. The campground hosts, Larry and Betty Harmon, have an Oliver molded fiberglass trailer. Larry is a frequent poster on the Casita forums under the handle Mountainborn. He recommended campsite #49 which had a great view of the reservoir. We made a campfire out of fallen wood.
